“Guerilla” tactics might be described as the activities of a small unit, separate from the main theater of operations, focusing on specific targets, and “under the radar”. At many national and regional folk music conferences, folk music performers can get their music heard by venue managers, booking agents, and folk radio DJs by using those kinds of tactics, outside of, and away from, the main conference activities.
During the weekend of November 13th through the 16th, Bob McKillop is leading a “guerilla” operation to The North East Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA), to benefit several Maine folk songwriters, and to promote his folk music web site, MaineFolkMusic.com. McKillop is working in collaboration with his good friend Phil Daligan, another well known local folk songwriter and performer. Phil is also a music promoter; this year, he put together a very successful summer-long music series on Peaks Island, called “Songwriters by the Sea”.
McKillop and Daligan are sharing the expenses for presenting several “guerilla” showcases at NERFA. These are informal, intimate, after-hours folk music shows in their conference hotel room, featuring a line up of musicians in short performances. McKillop and Daligan will invite venue managers and DJs to hear the music, and hopefully, to book the musicians into their venues, or get some radio airtime. McKillop is focusing on Maine talent for the most part (with several regional and national artists filling out the line up). His showcase is called “The Maine Event”. Daligan’s showcases are titled “Kamp Lobstah”, and include songwriters from all over the country.
Daligan will also perform during “The Maine Event” showcase. Other accomplished Maine folk songwriters who are signed on to play include Putnam Smith, Carolyn Currie, and Katherine Rhoda. Danielle Mirglia, Garrison Doles, and Jacob Johnson are regional artists in the showcase. In addition to hosting, McKillop will open “The Maine Event” with a short set. All of these songwriters are also performing in other “guerilla” showcases throughout the NERFA weekend.
Says Carolyn Currie, "I'm very excited to be included in Bob's line-up for the NERFA Guerrilla showcase, have the chance to play for people in the industry, and help represent the music community of Maine. With a new CD just coming out, I am eager for the exposure and opportunity to showcase my new work. Bob has made this really easy for me, offering support, information and a community of other musicians from this region who will be participating in this "wicked fun" event. Thanks Bob!"
The NERFA conference has also selected McKillop to host one of the official “Tri-Centric” conference showcase stages, where some of the most promising folk artists will perform earlier on Saturday evening.
McKillop launched MaineFolkMusic.com in January of this year, with the purpose of focusing attention on the talented folk songwriters and performers, and the great music venues that comprise the vibrant local music scene here in Maine. He hopes that this trip to NERFA will raise the profile of MaineFolkMusic.com, and Maine folk music in general, in the northeast region.
The North East Regional Folk Alliance, or NERFA, is one of several regional folk music conferences sponsored by the National Folk Alliance. These conferences culminate in the National Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, Tennessee, in February of each year.
Bob McKillop, Phil Daligan, and the other Maine songwriters mentioned above are all available for interviews and in-studio performances.
