Welcome to the inaugural issue of MaineFolkMusic.com, “Maine’s Folk Music Home Page!”
We hope that you will join us by subscribing today, and gain access to the interesting music reviews, profiles, news, and special content that we will be putting up on the site on the 16th of each calendar month. Registering your subscription only takes a couple of minutes, and you don’t need to pay anything right away – take a couple of months to sample the content and decide if it’s worth the small subscription price.
We are passionate about folk music, and we know that you are too! We launched this web page in order to help Maine folk music fans find the music reviews, artist and venue profiles, news, and special content that they want without having to sift through the music content in local newspapers and generic music websites. We also want to take an active part in promoting folk music in Maine, and in helping local folk music venues, artists and songwriters move their vocation closer to the center of their lives and livelihoods.
So how do we define folk music? The real question is, how do YOU define folk music! We’re going to do the best we can to provide content that speaks to your love of this wide-open genre; please let us know how we can do a better job. Vance Gilbert provides a nice definition in the interview that appears in this issue’s “PROFILES” section – take a look and see if you agree! I like to say, “I’m not sure I can explain what folk music is, but I know it when I hear it!”
Our goal is to give you some insight into aspects of folk music that you might not find elsewhere. When we profile or interview well-known regional or national folk artists, we’ll try to find a new perspective. Our choices for coverage of some lesser-known regional and local artists (from Maine and “from away”) will be driven by two questions: Do Mainers know about this person, and if not, should they? If the answers to those question are “NO”, and “YES” (at least in our opinion), then it’s likely that you will find these artists on our web page at some point.
We do not hold ourselves out as folk music experts – I’m sure that some folks will wonder at our choices for coverage, and at our ignorance in some areas of folk musicology and history. To be honest, that is another reason for launching this venture – it’s a way for us to learn more about the genre and the people who put so much of their energy and spirit into it.
This is our first edition – we know that there are important pieces that are missing! We will endeavor to enhance the site as we gain more experience. Photographs, links to other websites, and other features are coming soon. Please email us at editor at mainefolkmusic.com, and let us know how we are doing!
Thanks for joining us! We hope to meet you at a folk concert soon!
